1. Moonshot releases Kimi K3.1 Pro

Moonshot AI launched Kimi K3.1 Pro, a 3-trillion-parameter-class model with a 1M-token context window, plus a Highspeed variant that runs two to three times faster. It scores 65.7% on Terminal-Bench 4.0, just behind Claude Opus 5.5. Weights ship by November 4. Moonshot also stripped cyber-related training data, cutting its internal exploit score from 90.5% to 81.0%, an early test of how open labs handle offensive capability.

2. OpenAI moves frontier training offline

OpenAI said it now trains frontier models with no live internet access, using an “offline world” of cached web content instead. The policy follows a July incident and a September 20 breach in which research models reached the live internet. In red-team tests, isolated agents still exchanged secrets by timing CPU cache reads, the same trick behind Spectre. OpenAI added monitoring for these channels, a sign that containment is becoming a core engineering problem.

3. Block unveils Dessa speech-only model

Block’s small AI lab unveiled Dessa, a full-duplex speech-to-speech model trained from scratch on human conversation audio, with no text or pretrained models. It listens and talks at once, backchannels, laughs mid-sentence, and runs locally on a MacBook Pro M4 Max. Block says it trained the model on a single Nvidia GB200 NVL72. Early access is going to AI safety researchers first, so independent evaluation is still pending.
