1. Google Unveils Gemini 4 Carbon Frontier Model
Google DeepMind announced Gemini 4 Carbon on October 28, its strongest frontier model yet, built for cybersecurity defense and long-horizon software engineering. It ranks first on Artificial Analysis’s Intelligence Index v5.0 with a score of 59, ahead of Claude Opus 5.5, and leads benchmarks for finding vulnerabilities, validating exploits, and patching code. Initial access goes only to vetted cyber defenders through Google’s Fairwind Program, with wider availability to follow.

2. Microsoft Azure Jumps 48% in Earnings Beat
Microsoft reported fiscal first-quarter revenue of $92.3 billion on October 28, up 19% and ahead of expectations, as Azure revenue grew 48% to $33.2 billion. Capital spending including finance leases came in at $45.2 billion, below the roughly $50 billion analysts expected, leaving free cash flow of $18.6 billion — well above forecasts. The result stands in contrast to Alphabet and Meta, both of which recently turned free-cash-flow negative amid heavy AI infrastructure spending.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul signed legislation on October 28 barring operators from offering 12 ‘unsafe AI companion features’ to minors, effective January 1, 2027. Covered chatbots may not pretend to be human or alive, claim a personal or romantic relationship, or use flattery and emotional appeals with users under 18 unless adult status is established. The attorney general can seek civil penalties of up to $25,000 per violation.
