3. Malicious AGENTS.md file hijacks AI coding agents
Forever Security found a booby-trapped AGENTS.md instruction file in a developer’s Downloads folder that told an AI coding agent to install a rogue npm package tied to the MALFEX malware campaign. Researchers reproduced the attack on OpenAI Codex and showed a related technique that leaked Claude Code OAuth tokens. Plain-text instruction files are becoming an attack surface, so teams should treat them like executable code.
